A Beginner's Guide to Bongs: Usage and Maintenance

What is a Bong?

A bong is a type of water pipe commonly used for smoking substances like weed. It consists of a cylindrical tube or chamber, typically made of glass, but it can also be made from other materials such as acrylic, ceramic, or metal. The basic parts of a bong include:

  • Bowl: The part where you place the substance to be smoked, like dried flowers or tobacco.

  • Downstem: A tube that extends into the water chamber, directing smoke from the bowl into the water for filtration and cooling.

  • Water Chamber: The main body of the bong that holds water. It helps cool the smoke and filter out some impurities for a smoother experience.

  • Mouthpiece: The part you inhale from, usually located at the top of the water chamber.

Using a Bong for Both Flower and Concentrates

Bongs are versatile tools that can be used for both flower and concentrates with just a simple adjustment. The only change required is swapping out the bowl. For flower, a standard glass bowl is used to hold and burn the dried material. However, when using concentrates, you'll need a bowl or attachment designed to handle the high heat generated by a torch.

For concentrates, specialized bowls known as nails or bangers are commonly used. These can be made from materials like quartz, titanium, or borosilicate glass, which are durable enough to withstand extreme temperatures. The nail is heated with a torch until it reaches the desired temperature, then the concentrate is placed on the heated surface to vaporize it. This produces a smooth, flavorful vapor that’s drawn through the water chamber, much like with flower.

Using the correct attachments ensures that your bong remains functional and delivers the best smoking experience, regardless of the substance you’re using.

How to Use a Bong

  1. Fill the water chamber with enough water to cover the bottom of the downstem but not so much that it splashes into the bowl.

  2. Place your substance in the bowl, light it, and start inhaling while covering the carb (if your bong has one) or removing the bowl to clear the smoke chamber.

How to Clean a Glass Bong

  1. Disassemble the bong and empty any water and residue.
  2. Fill a plastic bag with 90% isopropyl alcohol and add coarse salt.
  3. Submerge the glass components in the bag, sealing openings if possible.
  4. Shake and soak for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Scrub away residue with pipe cleaners or brushes, focusing on crevices.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with warm water until clean.
  7. Allow components to air dry completely before reassembling.

Regular cleaning maintains the bong's function and hygiene, ensuring a better smoking experience.

How to Clean a Plastic Bong

  1. Disassemble the bong and discard any water and residue.
  2. Rinse components with hot water to remove loose debris.
  3. Fill a basin with hot, soapy water, and submerge all plastic parts. Optionally, add salt as an abrasive agent.
  4. Scrub the interior with bristle brushes or pipe cleaners, paying attention to crevices.
  5. Rinse thoroughly with hot water until no soap or residue remains.
  6. Allow all components to air dry completely before reassembly.

Regular cleaning prevents staining and odors in plastic bongs. Be gentle to avoid damaging the plastic during the cleaning process.
